DIRECTV sells four main packages, Entertainment, Choice, Ultimate and Premier, through a satellite dish or over the internet, plus a set of cheaper “Genre Packs” for people who want a narrower lineup. The headline prices run from $94.99 to $174.99 a month and carry a two-year price guarantee. Underneath that number sit a required $10 equipment charge, a regional sports fee of up to $23.99 on three of the four tiers, a satellite contract with a $480 exit fee, and a month-25 price that DIRECTV does not publish. This guide shows what each package really costs, which fees you can avoid, and which situations make DIRECTV a good deal or an expensive habit.
Key Answers Before You Order
Advertised for 24 months: Entertainment $94.99, Choice $99.99, Ultimate $129.99 and Premier $174.99. Dealer pages that quote DIRECTV show these numbers after a $5 rise per tier in early October, so older pages may be a step behind.
DIRECTV’s own fine print puts the worst case at $104.99, $133.98, $163.98 and $208.98 once the $10 equipment charge and, on Choice and up, the regional sports fee of up to $23.99 are added. Taxes are extra.
Only the package price. The guarantee excludes taxes, extra fees, add-on channels, equipment lease fees and one-time charges. After month 24, service continues month to month at DIRECTV’s then-current price.
Satellite. It can require a 24-month agreement with an exit fee of $20 per remaining month, up to $480, plus a $49.95 activation fee. Streaming has no annual contract, but unreturned Gemini devices cost $120 each.
Everyone on Choice, Ultimate or Premier, whether or not they watch local teams. It is set by your billing ZIP code. Entertainment has none, which makes it the only way to avoid the fee.
Genre Packs. Reported prices are MyEntertainment $43, MyNews $45, MiEspaรฑol $38 and MyKids about $21, with MySports around $65. There is also a free tier, MyFree DIRECTV, with 150-plus rotating channels and no card.
No. HBO Max, Paramount+ with Showtime, STARZ, Cinemax and MGM+ are included free for three months on the lower tiers, then renew at regular rates, about $64 a month combined, unless you cancel.
No, that package is sold through YouTube. DIRECTV carries your local CBS, FOX, NBC and ABC stations where available, ESPN and NFL Network, and lists NFL RedZone with Premier.
Partly. Since December 2024, satellite and cable providers must state an all-in price for video programming, but the rule leaves out taxes and equipment fees and does not cover streaming services.
The Four Packages and What They Really Add
The names suggest a ladder of quality, but the steps are mostly about three things: regional sports networks, a handful of movie and specialty channels, and whether premium movie services are bundled in. Seen that way, the packages are easier to choose between.
- 90+ channels streaming, 175+ on satellite
- Local networks and ESPN
- Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Unlimited, per DIRECTV’s terms
- No regional sports networks
- No regional sports fee either
- 125+ channels streaming, 215+ on satellite
- Regional sports networks where available
- MLB Network, Weather Channel and more
- Regional sports fee up to $23.99
- 160+ channels streaming, 270+ on satellite
- Everything in Choice
- Hallmark Channel, FX Movie Channel, NHL Network and others
- Regional sports fee up to $23.99
- 185+ channels streaming, 350+ on satellite
- HBO Max, Paramount+ with Showtime, STARZ and Cinemax built in
- MGM+ free for three months
- NFL RedZone listed in the lineup
- Regional sports fee up to $23.99
How each monthly bill is built: package price, equipment charge, and the possible sports fee
Package prices and fee maximums are as quoted from DIRECTV’s offer terms on dealer pages updated October 6. Totals are before taxes and before any promotional discounts.
| Package | Advertised, 24 months | With $10 equipment | Worst case with sports fee | Channels (stream / satellite) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entertainment | $94.99 | $104.99 | $104.99 (no sports fee) | 90+ / 175+ |
| Choice | $99.99 | $109.99 | $133.98 | 125+ / 215+ |
| Ultimate | $129.99 | $139.99 | $163.98 | 160+ / 270+ |
| Premier | $174.99 | $184.99 | $208.98 | 185+ / 350+ |
When we compared dealer pages, comparison sites and trade reporting, we found three different sets of package prices circulating. One set shows $89.99, $94.99, $124.99 and $169.99. A newer set, on pages updated October 6, shows $94.99, $99.99, $129.99 and $174.99, which is exactly $5 higher in every tier. A third, older set shows prices from before the June increases. A comparison site said DIRECTV raised standard streaming prices in October, and the dealer pages quoting DIRECTV agree.
The same exercise turned up different caps for the regional sports fee: $17.99, $19.99 and $23.99 on different pages. The $23.99 figure is the one on the newest terms. If a page quotes a lower cap, it is either older or describing a particular offer, so confirm it for your ZIP code before ordering.
In the advertisements, Choice is only $5 more than Entertainment. On the bill, the regional sports fee turns that into a much bigger step. Using DIRECTV’s stated maximum, Entertainment with its equipment charge totals $104.99 while Choice totals $133.98, a difference of $28.99 a month, or about $348 a year. The fee depends on your billing ZIP code and can be lower, but you will not see your number until you enter your address.
The jump from Choice to Ultimate is a clean $30 and from Ultimate to Premier a clean $45, because the sports fee is the same on all three. That means the real decision is a single one: do you watch regional sports enough to pay for the fee? If not, Entertainment is both the cheapest and the only tier with no sports fee.
The step from one tier to the next, in the ad and on the bill
Worst case assumes the maximum $23.99 regional sports fee and the $10 equipment charge on every tier. The Entertainment tier has no sports fee.
Every Fee That Can Appear, and Which Ones You Can Avoid
DIRECTV’s headline is the package price, but the fee schedule determines the bill. Some charges are mandatory, some depend on your equipment and ZIP code, and a few are optional traps that grow quietly.
| Fee | Amount | Applies to | Avoidable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equipment: Gemini lease or TV Access Fee | $10/mo per device | Streaming with Gemini; satellite | Streaming on your own device avoids the lease |
| Regional Sports Fee | Up to $23.99/mo | Choice, Ultimate, Premier | Only by choosing Entertainment |
| Activation | $49.95 once | Satellite | Not on streaming |
| Early termination | $20 per month left, up to $480 | Satellite agreement | Not on streaming |
| Extra Gemini device | $49 one time, plus $10/mo | Additional receivers | Skip extra rooms |
| Unreturned equipment | $120 per Gemini | Streaming and satellite | Return it on time |
| Advanced Receiver Service | Up to $25/mo, if it applies | Some satellite and Gemini accounts | Ask before ordering |
| Technician dispatch | $99 | Service visits | Try troubleshooting first |
| Late payment | Up to $12 | All accounts | Use autopay |
Fee amounts come from DIRECTV’s offer terms and fee schedule as summarized by a dealer on October 5 and from pages quoting DIRECTV’s terms. Your quote is the final word.
DIRECTV’s offer terms say the two-year price guarantee does not cover taxes, extra fees, add-on channels such as premium movie services, DIRECTV Tech Protect, equipment lease fees or one-time charges. In plain terms, the package price is frozen and the equipment charge, the regional sports fee and everything optional can change. Pages that quote DIRECTV also note that the 24-month pricing requires autopay and paperless billing.
If you are on a satellite agreement, ask the representative to put in writing which line items are covered by the guarantee and which are not. Then screenshot the checkout summary. A bill that rises in month 9 because a fee changed is not a broken promise under those terms, but it is a surprise you can plan for.
DIRECTV’s general fee schedule lists an Advanced Receiver Service charge of up to $25 a month for satellite and Gemini customers, and says it may be included in your package price depending on the package and start date. The current offer terms for the main packages do not list it among the required fees. That ambiguity is exactly why you should ask before you order and check the first bill for it.
An older dealer page we found also listed an Advanced Receiver Service fee alongside the sports fee. If your bill contains one and your quote did not, call and ask whether your package price was meant to include it.
Since December 19, 2024, cable operators and satellite providers have had to state an all-in price for video programming on bills and in advertising that mentions a price. The FCC’s stated aim was to end the practice of describing programming costs as a fee or surcharge. The rule includes broadcast retransmission and regional sports programming charges in that single price.
It has limits. Legal summaries note it does not cover streaming services, and that providers can still leave out taxes, administrative fees, equipment fees and other charges unrelated to video programming. We could not confirm how DIRECTV applies the rule to each offer, so the practical advice is unchanged: judge every offer by the itemized total at checkout. If a satellite bill still seems to hide programming charges, you can file a complaint with the FCC.
The Contract, the Exit Fee, and the Price After Month 24
Two dates matter more than any package name: the day you can leave without paying, and the day the promotional price ends. They are not the same day, and DIRECTV does not publish what happens after the second one.
DIRECTV’s terms say that after the 24-month guarantee, service continues month to month at the then-current price. A dealer’s summary noted that DIRECTV lists a $99.99 post-promotion figure for streaming Entertainment with the Gemini lease, but publishes no month-25 price for the other packages or for satellite. In other words, the bill you are signing up for is guaranteed for 24 months and unknowable after that.
The sensible response is to treat month 24 as a decision point. Put the date in your calendar when you start, and call a month or two before it ends to ask what your new rate will be and what current offers apply to your address. Customers who do this often find that the best price is the new-customer offer, not the renewal rate.
Qualifying satellite orders can require a 24-month agreement. If you leave early, DIRECTV lists $20 for each month remaining, up to $480. Satellite also adds a $49.95 activation fee and charges the $10 TV Access Fee for each device. Streaming, by contrast, is described as having no annual contract and no early termination fee, though a leased Gemini must be returned or you pay $120 per device.
The exit fee shrinks as you go, which is worth seeing laid out. Leave after 6 months and you could owe $360. After a year it is $240, after 18 months $120, and after 24 months nothing.
What leaving a satellite agreement early costs, by month
Calculated from DIRECTV’s stated early termination terms. Your agreement may differ; check the one you sign.
| Feature | Satellite | Streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Agreement | 24 months can be required | No annual contract |
| Exit fee | $20 per month left, up to $480 | None in offer terms |
| Activation | $49.95 one time | None listed |
| Equipment charge | $10/mo TV Access Fee per device | $10/mo Gemini lease, none on your own device |
| Needs home internet | No | Yes |
| Channel count | More, e.g. 175+ to 350+ | Fewer, e.g. 90+ to 185+ |
| If you leave | Return receivers or pay per unit | Return Gemini or pay $120 each |
Genre Packs and the Free Tier: The Cheaper Doors Into DIRECTV
If a $100-plus bill feels like too much television, DIRECTV’s narrower plans are worth a serious look. They were repriced this summer, and the changes were not all increases.
| Genre Pack | Reported price | Change | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| MyEntertainment | $43 | Up from $35 | 60+ entertainment networks, with Disney+, Hulu and HBO Max with ads |
| MyNews | $45 | Up from $40 | News-focused lineup |
| MySports | About $65 | Cut from $70 | Sports; news channels removed in the newer version |
| MiEspaรฑol | $38 | Up from $35 | Spanish-language lineup |
| MyKids | About $21 | Up from $20 | Children’s programming |
| MySports Extra | $14 | Up from $13 | Add-on for more sports networks |
| MyCinema | $11 | Up from $10 | Add-on for movie channels |
Prices and changes reflect notices to customers reported by The Desk and The Streamable in connection with the June 25 changes. Promotional prices, including lower MySports offers, have appeared since; confirm at checkout.
Two years of each plan, at worst-case fees for the big packages
Twenty-four times the monthly price. Genre Pack prices are the reported list prices; Signature packages include the $10 equipment charge and the maximum sports fee on Choice and above, before taxes and promotions.
If the main reason you are looking at DIRECTV is a set of entertainment networks rather than local sports, the gap is dramatic. MyEntertainment at $43 against Entertainment at $94.99 is $51.99 less a month, or about $624 a year, before the equipment charge on the larger plan. The tradeoffs are fewer channels and the fact that Genre Packs are streaming plans, so you need reliable internet.
The MySports repricing is a quiet bargain for fans. DIRECTV cut it to about $65 a month by removing news channels such as Fox News and MS NOW, and kept the older version, now called MySports Original, for existing customers at a higher price of $75 to $80 depending on the report. If you only want games, check the newer version first.
DIRECTV’s free tier offers a rotating selection of 150-plus ad-supported channels, with no credit card and no subscription, through the DIRECTV app. One reviewer who spent a week with it counted 173 movies and 66 shows on demand and 15 to 18 minutes of ads per hour, and concluded it offers far less than rivals such as Tubi or Pluto TV. Local broadcast networks and most live sports are not part of it.
That makes it a fair way to try the interface and the app before you pay, and a poor replacement for a paid package. It also helps answer a practical question: how much of a 200-channel lineup would you actually watch?
Premium Channels: Free for Three Months, Then Expensive
Free premium channels are the most effective bait in pay TV, because they renew silently at full price. DIRECTV is open about this in its terms, and the arithmetic is worth doing before you let a trial run.
| Premium service | Renewal price per month | On EntertainmentโUltimate | On Premier |
|---|---|---|---|
| HBO Max | $18.49 | 3 months free, then paid | Included |
| Paramount+ with Showtime | $13.99 | 3 months free, then paid | Included |
| STARZ | $11.99 | 3 months free, then paid | Included |
| Cinemax | $11.99 | 3 months free, then paid | Included |
| MGM+ | $7.99 | 3 months free, then paid | 3 months free, then paid |
| DIRECTV Sports Pack | $14.99 | First month free, then paid | Check your terms |
Renewal prices as listed by a dealer summarizing DIRECTV’s terms on October 5. The five premium services together come to $64.45 a month at those rates.
Premier costs $45 more than Ultimate in the advertisement and builds in HBO Max, Paramount+ with Showtime, STARZ and Cinemax. Bought separately at the renewal prices above, those four total $56.46 a month. If you would subscribe to all four, Premier is about $11 a month cheaper than Ultimate plus the channels. If you would subscribe to only three of them, the comparison is nearly even, and with two it favors Ultimate.
The way to decide is to count honestly. How many of these services would you pay for on their own? If the answer is two or fewer, stay on a cheaper tier and add what you want. If it is four, Premier is the better value, and it also lists NFL RedZone in its lineup.
Ultimate plus premium channels, one at a time, against Premier
Each bar adds a premium service at its renewal price to the $129.99 Ultimate package. Premier is $174.99 with the four built in.
The premium channels included free on Entertainment, Choice and Ultimate are an offer, not a feature, and they renew at current rates after three months. The same goes for the Sports Pack’s free first month at $14.99 afterward. If you do not want them, set a reminder for the end of month three and cancel in the account portal or by phone. A forgotten trial can add $60 or more a month, which is more than the difference between two packages.
Find Your Situation: What to Do and What to Watch For
A price table cannot tell you whether DIRECTV fits your life. These are the situations that come up most often, each with the move that tends to work and the trap that tends to catch people.
Start with the itemized statement, not the headline price. Add your package, your equipment charge or TV Access Fees, and your regional sports fee, then compare the total with the worst-case figures in this guide. If your total is higher, one of four things happened: a promotional discount ended, you have extra receivers, an add-on moved from free to paid, or you were charged a fee that should have been included.
On satellite, also check that your autopay and paperless billing credit is being applied. The 24-month pricing requires both, and a missing credit can quietly add ten dollars a month. Call, point to the specific line, and ask what changed.
Then Entertainment is the plan, and it is the only way to avoid the regional sports fee. Entertainment carries your local networks where available and ESPN, and DIRECTV’s terms include Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Unlimited with its packages. At the worst-case comparison, that is $104.99 a month against $133.98 on Choice, a difference of about $348 a year.
Paying for Choice only makes sense if you actually watch the regional networks, such as a local baseball or basketball team. Check which networks you would get at your address, and whether the teams you follow are on them this season, before the fee becomes part of your life.
The regional sports fee is set by your billing ZIP code, and it can change if you move. A fee of $4 in one market can be $23.99 in another, and a package that was good value in your old town can be a poor one in the new one. Satellite adds a second problem: a move can require reinstalling a dish and may trigger charges, and if you are still inside a 24-month agreement, cancelling carries the exit fee.
Before you move, call and ask three questions. What will my regional sports fee be at the new address? Can my service transfer without a new agreement? What would cancelling cost today? Then compare that answer with a new-customer offer at the new address, which is sometimes cheaper than transferring.
Satellite works without home internet, which is its real advantage. The price of that independence is the 24-month agreement, the $49.95 activation fee, the $10 TV Access Fee for each television, and the exit fee of up to $480. Count your TVs before you sign. Four rooms on satellite is $40 a month in equipment charges alone, which is almost the price of a Genre Pack.
Satellite also offers more channels at each tier, with counts running from 175-plus to 350-plus against 90-plus to 185-plus on streaming. If you are in a rural area with unreliable internet, that extra depth is paying for something real. If your internet is stable and your needs are modest, streaming is usually the cheaper and more flexible route.
Be precise about what you are getting. DIRECTV carries your local CBS, FOX, NBC and ABC stations where available, ESPN, and NFL Network, which covers much of the weekly schedule. NFL RedZone appears in the Premier lineup, and a Sports Pack at $14.99 a month adds specialty sports networks after a free first month. What it does not have is NFL Sunday Ticket, which is sold through YouTube.
That distinction matters if your team plays out of market. If most of your games air locally or on the national networks, DIRECTV covers you. If you want every out-of-market game, you need the YouTube package in addition, and some streaming-only games air on services such as Amazon or Netflix.
Be skeptical of every line, and use the free options as a yardstick. We found no senior discount in DIRECTV’s offer terms, so assume the price is the price. The best move is to price the smallest package that covers your must-have channels, and to check whether a Genre Pack would do. MyEntertainment at $43 or MyNews at $45 costs a fraction of the Signature packages.
If you already have DIRECTV, the most valuable call you can make comes before your price guarantee ends. Ask what the rate will be in month 25 and what a new-customer offer at your address would cost. A digital antenna can also deliver your local ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX stations free over the air in many places, which can shrink the number of channels you need to pay for.
Two kinds of increases get confused. The guaranteed package price does not change for 24 months, but fees and add-ons can, and this summer DIRECTV raised several Genre Pack prices effective June 25. A comparison site also documented hikes of $13 on Ultimate and $14 on Premier for some existing subscribers in June, moving Ultimate from $173.99 to $186.99 in one example. Existing customers are not always on the same terms as new ones.
If your bill rose, look at the line that changed. If it is the package price and you are outside your guarantee window, call and ask for a retention offer. If it is a fee, ask whether it applies to your package and start date.
Every additional device costs $10 a month, whether it is a satellite receiver or a leased Gemini, and an extra Gemini adds a $49 one-time fee. Five TVs can mean $50 in equipment charges before a single channel is counted. Review which rooms you actually use. If you stream, a TV with a built-in app or a streaming stick you already own can avoid the lease, since DIRECTV says you do not pay a lease fee if you stream on your own device.
Read that carefully, though. A dealer’s summary found the promotional discounts on your-own-device streaming are shorter than with a leased Gemini, so the cheaper-looking route is not always cheaper over two years. Run the numbers on both setups with your actual TV count.
DIRECTV sells separate Spanish-language packages, including Genre Pack MiEspaรฑol at about $38, and signature-style Spanish packages that dealer pages list under names such as Optimo Mรกs, Mรกs Ultra and Lo Mรกximo at different prices. The listed prices for those packages are inconsistent across the pages we found, so do not trust any single figure. Ask for an itemized quote for the exact package at your address, and compare it with the English-language equivalents above.
Put the costs on the same footing. DIRECTV Entertainment is $94.99 a month plus a $10 equipment charge. A September roundup put YouTube TV at about $82.99 a month, and Fubo’s Pro plan is $88.99 plus a regional sports fee of up to $16.99, according to Fubo’s own notices. Those numbers can change quickly, and all three vary by what channels you need and where you live.
The differences that matter are less about price than about structure. DIRECTV’s streaming and Genre Pack offers have no annual contract, and its satellite service does. DIRECTV’s guaranteed price lasts two years, which is longer than most streaming prices stay put. And only DIRECTV sells satellite for people without good internet.
There are two low-risk options. Reports describe a five-day trial on selected packages, though we could not confirm the current terms, so check at signup whether a card is required and when billing starts. And MyFree DIRECTV lets you use the app with 150-plus free channels and no payment method at all. Free preview weekends are also reported for premium movie channels.
Use either as an audition for the interface, not the content. The channels you would actually pay for, such as locals and your regional sports network, are not in the free tier.
Eight Mistakes That Make DIRECTV Cost More
The pattern in most billing complaints is the same few errors. Each has a quick fix.
The ad number leaves out the $10 equipment charge and, on three tiers, the sports fee. Fix: budget from the worst-case totals and ask for an itemized quote.
The real step can be about $29. Fix: pick Choice only if you will watch the regional networks.
The guarantee ends and the price becomes whatever is current. Fix: calendar month 24 and call before it.
Leaving early can cost up to $480. Fix: ask for the exit fee in writing and count how many months you are sure to stay.
They renew at roughly $64 a month for all five. Fix: set a reminder for month three.
Each device is $10 a month. Fix: return or stop using devices you do not need.
Three price sets are in circulation, and sports-fee caps vary. Fix: use your own ZIP-code quote as the final word.
An unreturned Gemini costs $120. Fix: return it on time and keep the receipt.
A Shopping Plan That Gets You the Real Number
Because the final price depends on your address, equipment and offer, the best defense is a short sequence of checks before you agree to anything.
- Step 1List the ten channels you watched most last month, and note whether any are regional sports networks. That list decides between Entertainment, Choice and the Genre Packs.
- Step 2Decide between satellite and streaming. If your home internet is steady, streaming avoids the contract and activation fee. If not, count your TVs for the $10 charge each.
- Step 3Enter your ZIP code and request an itemized quote showing the package price, equipment charge, regional sports fee, activation fee, and any extra fees. Ask specifically whether an Advanced Receiver Service fee applies.
- Step 4Ask what the price will be in month 25, whether the guarantee covers each line, and what leaving early would cost. Write down the answers and the name of the person you spoke to.
- Step 5Compare the total with a Genre Pack, a free option such as MyFree DIRECTV, and a digital antenna for locals. If a smaller plan covers your list, take it.
- Step 6After you sign, calendar three dates: the end of any free premium channel trial, month 24 for the guarantee, and the return deadline for leased equipment if you ever cancel.
Package prices, equipment charges, regional sports fee caps and the two-year price guarantee terms are as quoted from DIRECTV’s offer terms on authorized-dealer and comparison pages updated October 6 and on a dealer’s fee summary dated October 5. Early termination, activation, equipment-return and other fee amounts come from that fee summary. Genre Pack prices are from customer notices reported by trade outlets. Premium channel renewal prices, existing-customer increases and the free-trial details come from third-party reporting and may have changed. Prices vary by ZIP code, equipment and offer, and are before taxes and promotional discounts. This page is independent and is not affiliated with DIRECTV, TPG, YouTube or Fubo.
