Where Spotify posts updates

Spotify doesn’t run a public status dashboard with uptime graphs. Its own help pages send you to an X account and a community board, so those are the first places to look.

On the Ongoing Issues board, find your problem and press +VOTE if it is still under investigation. Spotify says it uses those threads to route bugs to its developers.

Most “Spotify is down” moments aren’t total blackouts. This year’s disruptions were usually narrower than that: the phone app stalled while desktop kept playing, sign-ins failed while music already queued kept going, or a single feature such as casting to a speaker broke on its own. The live check tells you whether Spotify’s front door is open. Everything below helps you work out which door is stuck for you, what it’s costing you, and when it’s worth spending money on a fix.

Key takeaways

  1. Is it Spotify or me? If the Web player, Sign-in, or App connections rows above turn red, the trouble is upstream. All green usually means the problem sits on your device or network.
  2. Should I reinstall during an outage? No. Reinstalling wipes your downloads, and downloads are the only thing that keeps playing when Spotify’s servers wobble.
  3. How long do big outages last? Hours, not days. The April 29 disruption had mostly cleared by midday, and Spotify called the May 12 problem resolved before 5 p.m. ET.
  4. Will I get a credit for downtime? Spotify’s published refund policy has no outage credit. You can cancel and keep Premium until your billing period ends.
  5. Paid, but the app still says Free? Check that you’re signed in to the account that was charged, and whether your phone or internet company bills you instead.
  6. How long do downloads survive offline? Thirty days without reconnecting, with up to 10,000 tracks on each of five devices.
  7. What does Premium cost in the U.S. now? $12.99 Individual, $18.99 Duo, $21.99 Family, and $6.99 Student.
  8. Is there a cheaper backup? Apple Music, Tidal, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music Unlimited for Prime members each list $11.99 for one person.

What our check can see, and what it can’t

Spotify works like a relay. Your phone has to reach your Wi-Fi or carrier, that network has to reach Spotify, Spotify has to hand your app a streaming server, and your account has to say you’re allowed to play. A failure at any link feels identical from the couch: a spinning wheel and silence.

The five links between you and your musicA chain of five boxes: your device, your network, Spotify front door, app streaming servers, and your account. The middle two are checked by this page; the outer ones only you can test. Your deviceapp, storage, updates Your networkWi-Fi, carrier, school filters Front doorweb player, login, API Stream serversthe directory appsuse to connect Your accountplan, payment, region Tested live on this page Only you can test theseCheck in your account
Our server can confirm the middle of the chain. The ends are yours, which is why a green result and a broken app can both be true.

When we pointed our own server at Spotify for this update, the first surprise was the homepage. Requesting spotify.com/us/ didn’t return a page at all. It returned a permanent redirect to the web player. The previous version of this checker treated that redirect as “inconclusive,” which meant it could never report an all-clear. We fixed it by following the redirect’s address and counting any hop that stays inside spotify.com as a live reply.

We also added two checks that sit closer to what the apps do. In our testing, Spotify’s Web API answered an unsigned request with a 401 “missing token” error in under a tenth of a second, which is exactly what a healthy API should say to a stranger. The second, apresolve.spotify.com, is the directory the apps ask for a streaming server; it returned a list of servers in about 80 milliseconds. If either of those stops answering while the web pages load fine, the problem is likely deeper than a website hiccup.

How recent Spotify disruptions actually played out

Circles: spikes in user reports, sized roughly by volume. Squares: feature bugs logged on Spotify’s Ongoing Issues board.

On April 29, 2026, reports began climbing around 8 a.m. ET and passed 4,000 before most people had finished breakfast; by midday the count had dropped below 100. On May 12, the @SpotifyStatus account acknowledged app problems, and many people couldn’t sign in at all. On May 18, Downdetector logged more than 10,000 reports by late afternoon on the West Coast, most of them about the mobile app. A smaller wave on July 27 hit the web player.

The quieter problems are easier to miss. Spotify’s own Ongoing Issues board logged downloads disappearing after an app relaunch in February, paying subscribers stuck on the free tier in March, Chromecast and other Spotify Connect speakers dropping out in May, and Android playback failures in June. None of those would show up as a global outage, and a checker that only pings Spotify’s homepage would call every one of them “up.”

Find your situation

Start with the card that matches what you’re seeing. Each one says what’s really going on and what to do next.

The live check is red and the app says “Something went wrong”

This is a real outage, and your best move is to do almost nothing. Close the app once, switch your phone to offline mode, and play anything you’ve downloaded. Don’t reinstall: Spotify’s own help pages warn that a reinstall deletes your downloads, which turns a two-hour outage into a silent commute. Check @SpotifyStatus for an all-clear before you start changing settings.

Everything here is green, but your app won’t play

Spotify is answering, so look closer to home. Open the web player on a laptop. If music plays there, the issue is your phone or tablet. Spotify asks for at least 250 MB of free storage, an updated operating system, and a stable connection, so free some space, update, and restart. Grayed-out songs usually mean the device is stuck in offline mode or the track isn’t licensed in your market, not that Spotify is down.

You paid for Premium, but the app still shows Free

This exact bug was logged on Spotify’s Ongoing Issues board in March. Before blaming a bug, rule out the two common causes. First, Spotify says a charge on a free account usually means Premium is active on a different Spotify account, so sign out and try your other email, Apple, or Google login. Second, if your plan came through a phone or internet provider, the billing lives with them. Two charges in one month? One may be a pending authorization from your bank, or an early charge after switching plans; check your receipts on the account page.

Your downloaded playlists disappeared

Spotify needs each device to come online at least once every 30 days so it can report plays and pay artists; miss that window and downloads are removed. There’s also a ceiling of 10,000 tracks per device on up to five devices, so adding a sixth phone or laptop can affect downloads elsewhere. If neither applies, you may have hit a bug like the one logged in February, where downloads vanished after closing and reopening the app.

Your speaker, TV, or car won’t connect

Spotify Connect needs your phone and the speaker on the same Wi-Fi the first time they pair, and it can drop a speaker that has been paused for more than ten minutes. If a device is missing from the list, sign in to Spotify on the device itself, or turn off “Local device visibility” under Settings, then Apps and devices. When every speaker in the house fails at once, check the Ongoing Issues board: casting to Chromecast devices failed for many people in May.

You can’t sign in

Look at the Sign-in row above before you reset anything. On May 12 the login service itself was failing for many people, and a password reset during that window just adds a second problem. If Sign-in shows Working, the usual culprit is a mismatched sign-in method: an account created with Apple or Google may not have a Spotify password at all. Use the method you signed up with, or request a reset link from Spotify’s own accounts page.

It works on cellular but not on school, office, or hotel Wi-Fi

That’s a network filter, not an outage. Many campus and workplace networks block streaming on purpose. Switching to mobile data proves it in ten seconds. The desktop app is the most sensitive here, because a firewall that blocks it will look exactly like a dead service. Ask the network administrator, or download what you need before you arrive.

Outages keep interrupting a plan you pay for

Spotify doesn’t publish an outage credit, so a long disruption won’t lower your bill automatically. You can contact support with the date and what failed; any goodwill credit is up to Spotify. Your firmer options are timing and switching. Canceling keeps Premium until the end of the period you’ve paid for, and your playlists stay on the free tier. The refunds and canceling section below walks through it.

Fix it in this order

The order matters because the last step costs you something. Work down the list and stop when the music starts.

  1. Read the live check. Red on the Web player, Sign-in, or App connections rows means wait. Green means keep going.
  2. Look for an official note. Scan @SpotifyStatus and the Ongoing Issues board for your device or feature.
  3. Swap one thing at a time. Try the web player, then another device, then cellular instead of Wi-Fi. The first swap that works tells you where the fault is.
  4. Restart, then update. Fully close Spotify, restart the device, and install any app or system update.
  5. Reinstall only as a last resort. It clears the app’s cache but also deletes every download, so do it on Wi-Fi with time to re-download.
  6. Contact Spotify support. Have the time it started, your device model, and a screenshot of any error ready.

What Spotify Premium costs and what you get

Spotify raised U.S. prices in early 2026, its third increase since mid-2023. New subscribers paid the new rates right away and existing ones moved over at their February billing date. Here’s what spotify.com listed for the U.S. when we checked it for this review:

Lossless up to 24-bit/44.1 kHzOffline Backup downloads15 hrs/month of audiobooksJam and BlendFamily parental controls

Two details people miss. Duo and Family both require every member to live at the same address. And on Duo and Family, the audiobook hours belong to the plan manager only, not to everyone on the plan.

Individual plans after this year’s round of increases. The gap is a dollar a month, or $12 a year; family plans differ more.

If you’re weighing a backup service

A second service as a standby rarely makes sense at these prices. Switching does, if outages keep landing on the things you rely on. The biggest difference is on family plans, where Spotify is now among the most expensive.

Spotify

$12.99 one person$21.99 familyFree with ads

Makes sense if you use Jam, audiobooks, or Hulu with Student. Duo is $18.99.

Apple Music

Makes sense if your household is on iPhone and wants hi-res lossless.

YouTube Music Premium

$11.99 one person$18.99 familyFree with ads

Makes sense if you live on YouTube; full YouTube Premium at $15.99 includes it.

Run the household math before you move. A family switching from Spotify Family to Apple Music Family saves $2 a month, or $24 a year. A student on Spotify’s $6.99 plan who also watches Hulu is probably already on the best deal in the table.

Refunds, canceling, and your rights

Spotify’s refund policy is short. If you cancel Premium, you keep it until the end of your billing period and then drop to the free tier. It doesn’t list outages as a reason for a refund. It also can’t refund gift cards bought in a store (return those to the store) or Premium billed through a partner such as a phone carrier.

Audiobooks are the exception worth knowing. Spotify says you can ask for a refund on an audiobook purchase made in the last seven days if you’ve heard less than half of it, and its refund page adds that disrupted or lost audiobook listening time may qualify too. If an outage ate hours you paid for, ask.

To cancel, open your account page, choose Manage your plan, then Cancel subscription. On Duo or Family, only the plan manager can cancel; a member who follows the same steps just leaves the plan. If the cancel option isn’t there, your plan is billed by a partner, and you’ll find their contact link under Payment on the same page.

Where the federal “click to cancel” rule stands

The FTC’s 2024 rule requiring one-click cancellation was struck down by a federal appeals court in 2025 on procedural grounds. In March 2026 the FTC opened a new rulemaking on subscription practices and asked for public comment. The older federal law against tricky online subscriptions still applies in the meantime, and several states, including California, have their own automatic-renewal laws.

Translate outage times to your clock

News coverage of Spotify outages usually quotes Eastern Time, which gets confusing fast if you’re in Denver or Honolulu and trying to match a report to what happened on your phone. Tap the button and we’ll place you on the U.S. time-zone map and convert the numbers. Your location stays in your browser; nothing is sent to our server.

Bands are approximate; Alaska and Hawaii sit west of this map.

How the live check works

When you open this page, our server asks five Spotify services for a reply, waiting up to three seconds each. A normal reply counts as reachable. For the Web API, a 401 “missing token” reply counts too, because that’s what a healthy API says when no one is signed in. A server error (any 5xx code) is shown as a problem. Timeouts, blocks, and anything we can’t verify are shown as inconclusive, never as an outage. A reply slower than 2.5 seconds is flagged as slow.

All visitors share one result for three minutes, so pressing the button repeatedly won’t hammer Spotify. The check doesn’t play audio, sign in, or test every region, and it can’t confirm a worldwide outage on its own. We don’t collect reports, cookies, or personal data.
