BJ’s doesn’t have a senior discount. Ask at the membership desk and you’ll get a polite no, and you won’t find an age-based price anywhere on its website. That surprises people, because the club does run special offers for healthcare workers, the military and people on public benefits, and many of those offers cut the first year’s fee by more than half.
So the real question for an older shopper isn’t “Is there a senior deal?” It’s “Will this membership pay for itself in my household?” A retired couple who drives, cooks at home and has room for a 24-pack of paper towels will usually come out ahead. A widow living alone in a one-bedroom apartment, who doesn’t drive and buys groceries for one, often won’t, unless she qualifies for the $25 public-benefits offer. This guide works through those situations with real numbers, including the gas savings most comparison articles leave out and the fact that BJ’s hasn’t had pharmacies since 2007.
Nine Straight Answers for Older Shoppers
These are the questions retirees and their families bring to the membership desk. The short versions are here; the details follow.
No. There’s no age-based membership price or senior shopping day. Older shoppers can still use the public-benefits, military or healthcare-worker offers if they qualify, and BJ’s runs general new-member promotions several times a year.
For new members, general promotions sold through Groupon have recently priced the Club card at $15 for the first year. If you receive SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, WIC, a VA pension or another listed program, the public-benefits offer is $25 for Club or $50 for Club+, with a $10 or $20 reward to spend in your first 30 days.
Yes, for eligible food and beverages in clubs, and BJ’s also accepts SNAP for eligible online orders in many of its states. You still need a membership to shop, which is why the discounted SNAP membership offer matters.
No. BJ’s closed its pharmacies in 2007. You can buy over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and health supplies there, but prescriptions have to be filled elsewhere.
It is if you spend about $3,000 a year on eligible purchases, roughly $250 a month, because the 2% reward then covers the upgrade. Regular BJ’s Gas customers break even sooner, since Club+ adds 5 cents off every gallon.
Each membership includes one additional household card at no extra cost. You can add up to three more for $35 each, which is handy when a caregiver does some of the shopping.
BJ’s advertises a 100% money-back guarantee: the primary member can cancel and request a refund for the current membership period. That only works once; second or later cancellations aren’t refundable.
Yes, if you’re on Easy Renewal, which the discounted offers require. It charges the then-current fee each year unless you cancel before the renewal date in your account, at a member services desk or by calling 1-800-BJS-CLUB.
Yes, in many ZIP codes. Club members pay a same-day delivery fee starting at $9.99. Club+ members get two free same-day deliveries a year on orders of $50 or more, and curbside pickup is always free on Club+.
What a BJ’s Membership Costs and What Each Level Includes
BJ’s raised its fees on January 1, 2025, for the first time in seven years: Club went from $55 to $60 and Club+ from $110 to $120. Here is what those prices buy today.
| Feature | Club | Club+ | What it means for a retiree |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yearly fee | $60 | $120 | Plus sales tax where it applies |
| Rewards | None | 2% back, up to $500 a year | Pays off around $3,000 of yearly spend |
| BJ’s Gas | Member pricing | Extra 5¢ a gallon | Worth $25 on 500 gallons a year |
| Same-day delivery | From $9.99 per order | 2 free a year on $50+ orders | Matters if you don’t drive |
| Curbside pickup | $3.99 on orders of $50 or less | Always free | Saves lifting in a busy parking lot |
| Household card | 1 included | 1 included | Up to 3 more at $35 each |
| Manufacturer coupons | Accepted | Accepted | Stack with BJ’s own coupons |
| Money-back guarantee | Yes | Yes | First cancellation only |
Two features set BJ’s apart for budget-minded older shoppers. First, it accepts manufacturer coupons, including the paper ones that still arrive in Sunday newspapers, and lets you combine them with its own app coupons. Costco does not accept manufacturer coupons. Second, BJ’s accepts SNAP EBT for eligible food, in clubs and for many online orders, which not every warehouse club does online.
One honest drawback: BJ’s is a regional club. Its 267 clubs sit in 22 states, concentrated from New England down the East Coast to Florida, with expansion into the Midwest and, this year, Texas. If you split the year between two homes, check whether both are near a club before paying for Club+.
The Discounted Ways In: Benefits, Military, Healthcare and Promotions
BJ’s doesn’t discount for age, but it does for circumstances that many older adults share. When we compared BJ’s own offer pages side by side this month, three groups got the same pricing.
New members who receive government assistance can join the Club tier for $25 with a $10 reward, or Club+ for $50 with a $20 reward. The list of qualifying programs is long and includes several that older adults commonly receive: SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, WIC, the Veterans and Survivors Pension and federal public housing assistance, among others. Verification happens online through ID.me, the same identity service many government agencies use.
Read the reward rules carefully. The reward appears in your account about 24 hours after you enroll and has to be used within 30 days, in a club, in the app or on BJs.com, or it disappears. The offer is for new members only, requires Easy Renewal and is listed as expiring January 30, 2027. Sign up at BJs.com/SNAPEBT.
Veterans, service members and surviving spouses can get the same $25 and $50 pricing through BJ’s military page, also verified through ID.me and also tied to the January 30, 2027 date as reported. For a retired veteran who doesn’t qualify for the benefits offer, this is the most likely discount.
Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, medical assistants, hospital employees and other listed health roles get the same $25 or $50 pricing with the same rewards. If you are semi-retired and still pick up shifts at a clinic or hospital, check whether you can verify.
BJ’s regularly sells deeply discounted first-year memberships through partners. A current Groupon listing offers the Club card for $15 or Club+ for $50, for new members, with Easy Renewal. New club openings bring their own “founding member” offers; a new club in Ocala, Florida opened today, October 23, with limited-time membership deals. If you can wait, a promotion usually appears within a few months.
Every discounted offer above requires Easy Renewal, which charges the full then-current fee when your first year ends: $60 or $120, plus tax. Put the renewal date on your calendar the day you join. A month before it, decide whether you used the membership enough. If you didn’t, cancel through your BJs.com account, at the member services desk or by calling 1-800-BJS-CLUB before the renewal starts.
Will a Membership Pay for Itself in Your Household?
A warehouse club only saves money if what you buy there is cheaper than what you’d buy elsewhere and you actually use it before it spoils. Here is a simple way to check.
Step one: estimate what you would really buy. Look at last month’s grocery and household receipts. Circle the items that come in bulk and that you go through steadily: coffee, paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, dish soap, canned goods, frozen vegetables, olive oil, nuts, pet food and adult incontinence supplies are typical. Fresh produce and dairy are trickier for one or two people, because the savings vanish when food is thrown away.
Step two: compare unit prices. BJ’s shelf tags and app show price per ounce or per count. Compare a few of your circled items with your usual store’s unit price, ideally on the same brand. Club savings on staples can be meaningful, but they vary widely by item, and supermarket sales sometimes beat club prices. If your circled items add up to $200 a month and you’d save 15%, that’s about $360 a year against a $60 fee.
Step three: add the extras you’d use. Gas savings, free pickup or delivery on Club+, the 2% reward and manufacturer coupons all count. So do the things you’d buy once a year anyway, such as tires, a new TV or holiday food, if BJ’s price is lower.
Step four: subtract the traps. Impulse buys on the way to the paper towels, food that spoils, and driving farther than you otherwise would all eat into savings. Shop with a list, and if the nearest club is 30 minutes away, count the gas and time.
| Household | Monthly BJ’s spend | Likely best tier | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single senior, doesn’t drive | Under $100 | Benefits offer or skip | Savings rarely cover $60; delivery fees add up |
| Single senior, drives, cooks | $100–$200 | Club | Covers the fee on staples and gas |
| Retired couple | $200–$300 | Club, or Club+ with gas | Club+ breaks even near $250/month |
| Grandparents raising grandkids | $300+ | Club+ | 2% reward and free pickup pay off |
| Caregiver shopping for a parent | Varies | Household card | Share an existing membership instead of buying one |
Our planning estimates. The right answer depends on your local prices and what you buy.
Which Situation Sounds Like Yours?
Membership advice usually assumes a family of four with a minivan. Here are the households we hear from most often instead.
Take the $25 public-benefits offer, and spend the $10 reward on something you’d buy anyway within the first 30 days. Use SNAP for eligible food. Focus your trips on shelf-stable staples and household goods, and split perishables with a neighbor or friend. Before your first renewal, decide whether the club saved you more than $60; if not, cancel or ask whether a new promotion is available.
One timing issue worth knowing: new federal SNAP work rules now apply to able-bodied adults aged 55 to 64 without dependents, who must document at least 80 hours a month of work, volunteering or training or risk losing benefits after three months in a three-year period. Researchers at Cornell estimate about 1.6 million households must newly document those hours. If you’re in that age range, check your state’s exemptions, because a membership bought to stretch SNAP is less useful if benefits stop.
This is the household BJ’s suits best. Start with the Club tier. If you fill up at BJ’s Gas and your receipts show about $250 a month or more at the club, upgrade to Club+ at renewal. Keep using manufacturer coupons, a quiet advantage BJ’s has over Costco, and check the app for digital coupons before each trip.
Delivery changes the math. On the Club tier, same-day delivery starts at $9.99 per order, and curbside pickup costs $3.99 on orders of $50 or less. If someone else drives you, Club+ makes pickup free and includes two free same-day deliveries a year on orders over $50. If you need deliveries every week, compare the total with a supermarket’s delivery service before joining; a club only wins if bulk savings outrun the fees. Remember that delivery isn’t available in every ZIP code.
Don’t buy a second membership. Ask your parent to add you as the free household cardholder, or add up to three more cards for $35 each. Bulk incontinence supplies, nutrition shakes, wipes and paper goods are where warehouse pricing helps caregivers most. BJ’s flags FSA- and HSA-eligible items online, so if your parent’s care costs come out of a health savings account, look for that label.
Club+ is often worth it here. A household feeding growing kids can easily pass $3,000 a year at the club, at which point the 2% reward covers the upgrade, and free curbside pickup saves wrangling children through a warehouse. If the grandchildren get free or reduced-price school lunch, that program also qualifies you for the $25 or $50 benefits pricing.
Check the map first. BJ’s operates in 22 states, with heavy coverage from Maine to Florida and newer clubs in the Midwest and Texas. A snowbird who lives in New Jersey and winters in Florida can use BJ’s in both places; one who winters in Arizona cannot. If you’ll only be near a club half the year, the Club tier usually makes more sense than Club+.
BJ’s left the pharmacy business in 2007, so there’s nothing to transfer. You can still buy over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, first-aid supplies and many health items in bulk. For prescriptions, compare your Medicare Part D plan’s preferred pharmacies; that choice usually matters far more to your drug costs than any club membership.
Gas Savings and the BJ’s Credit Card
For many retirees who still drive, gas is where a BJ’s membership quietly earns its keep. The store credit card can add more, if you pay it off every month.
| Card | At BJ’s | Elsewhere | BJ’s Gas | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BJ’s One Mastercard | 3% back | 1.5% back | 10¢ off a gallon | Any BJ’s membership |
| BJ’s One+ Mastercard | 5% back | 2% back | 15¢ off a gallon | Club+ membership |
The card terms exclude a few things worth knowing: gas purchases themselves don’t earn the percentage rewards (you get the per-gallon discount instead), and neither do membership fees, delivery and pickup fees, alcohol, tobacco or gift cards. Rewards post monthly, can be redeemed once you have $10, and don’t expire while the account stays open and in good standing.
The usual warning applies with extra force for people on fixed incomes. Store credit cards carry high interest rates, and a single month of carrying a balance can erase a year of rewards. If you already have a no-fee cash-back card you like and pay in full, compare carefully. The BJ’s card mainly makes sense for households that spend steadily at BJ’s and pay every statement in full.
Health, Vision and Benefit Cards: What BJ’s Does and Doesn’t Cover
Older shoppers often ask about medical services and benefit cards. The honest answers are mixed.
Many BJ’s clubs have an optical department selling eyeglasses and contact lenses, often with an independent optometrist on site or nearby for exams. Services and hours vary by club, so call ahead. If your Medicare Advantage plan includes a vision allowance, ask both the plan and the club whether that club’s optical shop is in network before you order glasses.
Many Medicare Advantage plans load a prepaid card for over-the-counter items or healthy food. Whether it works at BJ’s depends on the card company and your plan’s approved-store list, not on BJ’s alone, and we did not find a public confirmation from BJ’s that these cards are broadly accepted. Call the number on the back of your card and ask, “Is BJ’s Wholesale Club an approved retailer for my card, in clubs and online?” Don’t buy a membership just for this unless the answer is yes.
SNAP EBT works for eligible food and beverages in clubs, and BJ’s was an early warehouse club to accept SNAP for online orders, rolling it out state by state starting in 2021. Online, BJ’s labels FSA- and HSA-eligible products, which helps if you still have a health savings account from your working years; account owners on Medicare can keep spending an existing HSA balance on qualified items even though they can no longer contribute.
What’s Running Right Now
BJ’s promotional calendar is busy this time of year. If you’re deciding whether to join, these dates matter.
Through October 31, BJ’s is marking its 42nd anniversary with 42% off dozens of items, including some groceries, pantry staples and household goods; rainchecks aren’t offered, so go early. Early Black Friday deals start today, October 23. From October 31 to November 9, members who spend $150 or more in a single transaction in a club, in the app or online qualify for a free Butterball turkey, with coupons available November 14. For a household that hosts Thanksgiving, it makes sense to time the big holiday shop to that window.
The business is doing well enough that these promotions aren’t a sign of trouble. BJ’s reported a record 8.5 million members in its second quarter, with membership fee income up nearly 10%, and it continues to open clubs. That also means don’t expect fees to fall; plan around promotions instead.
BJ’s vs Costco for an Older Household
Many retirees live within reach of both. Here is how the two compare on the points older shoppers ask about most.
| Point | BJ’s | Costco | Edge for seniors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic membership | $60 | $65 | BJ’s, slightly |
| Upper tier | $120 | $130 | BJ’s, slightly |
| Upper-tier reward | 2%, up to $500/yr | 2%, up to $1,250/yr | Costco for big spenders |
| Manufacturer coupons | Accepted | Not accepted | BJ’s |
| Benefits-based join offer | $25 / $50 with SNAP, SSI, Medicaid and more | Check current offers | BJ’s |
| Pharmacy | None since 2007 | Many warehouses | Costco |
| Where it operates | 22 states, mostly East | Nationwide | Costco for snowbirds out West |
For a coupon-clipping couple on the East Coast who fills prescriptions elsewhere, BJ’s usually wins on price of entry. For a household that spends heavily, wants a pharmacy in the same trip, or splits time between states BJ’s doesn’t serve, Costco often makes more sense. Some families keep both and alternate years with promotions, which is easier than it sounds because both refund a first-year fee if you aren’t satisfied under their guarantees; read each club’s current terms before relying on that.
Making Bulk Work When You Live Alone
The most common complaint we hear from single older shoppers is simple: “I can’t use all that before it goes bad.” These habits fix most of it.
- Buy bulk only on what doesn’t spoil. Paper goods, cleaning supplies, coffee, canned fish, rice, oatmeal, frozen vegetables and pet food are safe bets. Treat fresh berries, bagged salad and large dairy packs with suspicion unless you’ll share them.
- Use the freezer as a pantry. Split a family pack of chicken or ground meat into single portions in freezer bags the day you shop, and label each bag with the date.
- Shop with a neighbor. Two single people splitting a rotisserie chicken, a flat of eggs or a big bag of apples both get club prices without waste. A household card lets a trusted friend or relative shop on the same membership.
- Check unit prices every time. The bigger package isn’t always cheaper per ounce, at BJ’s or anywhere. The shelf tag and the app show the unit price.
- Watch the “while I’m here” cart. Warehouse clubs are designed for browsing. A written list, and a rule that anything off-list waits until next trip, protects the savings.
- Lift smart. Ask staff to help load heavy cases, use curbside pickup if available, or shop with a helper. A pulled back costs more than any membership saves.
A First-Visit Game Plan
- Join online first if you’re using a discounted offer; the benefits, military and Groupon deals are activated online, and you pick up the physical card on your first visit.
- Download the BJ’s app and clip digital coupons before you go. The app also holds your digital membership card and ExpressPay, which lets you scan and pay on your phone.
- Bring your list and your manufacturer coupons.
- Go on a weekday morning if crowds or parking are hard for you.
- Spend any new-member reward on something you planned to buy, within 30 days.
- Fill up at BJ’s Gas on the way out if there’s a station at your club and you need fuel.
- Note your renewal date in your calendar before you leave the parking lot.
Scams That Use the BJ’s Name
Fake “BJ’s customer survey” texts and emails promising a free membership or a $100 gift card if you answer a few questions and pay a small shipping fee are a common phishing pattern for big retailers. BJ’s real offers live on BJs.com and in its app; the discounted memberships above are verified through ID.me, not by a stranger asking for your card number. Never pay for a “free” membership with a gift card. If you get one of these messages, delete it, and report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC’s latest report to Congress found Americans 60 and older reported more than $3 billion in fraud losses last year.

Our Verdict for Older Shoppers
A club is within an easy drive, you buy household staples and gas regularly, and you’ll use coupons. Or you qualify for the $25 benefits or military offer, where the reward alone nearly covers your first-year cost.
You live alone, don’t drive, and would rely on paid delivery; or you’d mostly buy perishables. Run the four-step check above first.
There’s no club near you or your second home, you need a pharmacy, or your Medicare benefit card isn’t accepted there and that was the main reason to join.
Questions people still ask
Can I shop at BJ’s without a membership?
Generally, you need a membership to buy in clubs and on BJs.com. A household cardholder on someone else’s membership counts.
Is BJ’s cheaper than Costco for seniors?
Membership is slightly cheaper at full price ($60 vs $65 for the basic tier), BJ’s takes manufacturer coupons and has more frequent new-member promotions. Costco has a broader national footprint and in-warehouse pharmacies. Which is cheaper depends on what you buy and where you live.
Does BJ’s offer a senior hour?
Not as a standing program. Weekday mornings are typically quieter in most clubs if crowds are a concern.
What happens to my membership if I move to a state without BJ’s?
You can shop online for delivery where it’s offered, but without a nearby club the value drops sharply. Use the money-back guarantee if it’s your first cancellation.
Can my spouse have their own card?
Yes. Every membership includes one additional household card at no charge.
Do Club+ rewards expire?
Club+ rewards don’t expire while your membership is active, except for certain promotional rewards. You can redeem them once you reach $10.
Can I use my SNAP card for BJ’s delivery?
BJ’s accepts SNAP for eligible online orders in many of the states where it operates, including some ship-to-home orders. Delivery and pickup fees themselves can’t be paid with SNAP, so have a second payment method ready.
Does the household card holder need to live with me?
BJ’s calls it a household membership, so expect it to be meant for someone in your household. If a caregiver lives elsewhere, ask member services how they handle it before adding them.
Is the $25 benefits offer available if I let my membership lapse years ago?
The offer is described as for new members only. If you were a member in the past, ask member services whether your old account disqualifies you before verifying through ID.me.
Can I upgrade from Club to Club+ partway through the year?
Yes, BJ’s allows upgrades; ask member services how the fee is prorated for your account. Upgrading right before a big holiday or gas-heavy month can make the 2% reward and gas savings count sooner.
