Does Wells Fargo Do Car Loans?

Budget Seniors, October 25, 2026October 25, 2026
United States · Car buyers & current Wells Fargo Auto customers · Checked October 25

Yes, Wells Fargo does car loans, just not the way most people expect. You can’t walk into a branch or fill out an application on its website and leave with an approval. Wells Fargo lends for cars only through dealerships, and it doesn’t refinance existing auto loans at all.

That matters whether you’re shopping for a car, holding a Wells Fargo Auto loan already, or just wondering whether your bank can beat the dealer’s offer. We went through Wells Fargo’s own auto loan pages and FAQs, its personal loan terms, its recent partnership with Volkswagen and Audi, and the latest national rate data. Below you’ll find what Wells Fargo actually offers, what to do instead when it doesn’t fit, every customer service number you might need, and a calculator that shows how much a single percentage point at the dealer really costs.

The short answer Wells Fargo makes auto loans only through its network of nearly 11,000 dealerships; there’s no direct application and no auto refinancing. It’s also now the preferred purchase financing provider for Volkswagen and Audi in the U.S. If you want your own approval before visiting a dealer, a Wells Fargo personal loan (6.74% to 26.74% APR, $3,000 to $100,000) is open only to customers of at least 12 months. Current borrowers can reach Wells Fargo Auto at 1-800-289-8004.

Eight Quick Answers

The questions people actually ask about Wells Fargo and cars, answered first.

1Can I apply for a Wells Fargo car loan online?

No. Wells Fargo says its auto loans are available only through its dealership network. The dealer submits the application for you.

2Does Wells Fargo refinance car loans?

No. Its FAQ states it doesn’t offer auto refinancing. Credit unions, other banks and online lenders do.

3Can I get preapproved by Wells Fargo before shopping?

Not for an auto loan. Customers of at least 12 months can apply for a personal loan instead, which funds as cash you can take to a dealer or seller.

4What rate will Wells Fargo give me?

It doesn’t publish auto rates; your dealer quotes them. For context, the national average in the second quarter was 6.35% for new cars and 11.19% for used.

5Is Wells Fargo the lender for Volkswagen and Audi?

Yes, since May 2025, as the preferred purchase financing provider, co-branded with Volkswagen Financial Services. Ducati was added in April 2026. VW’s own arm still handles leases.

6Can I pay off my Wells Fargo auto loan early?

Yes. Get a payoff quote online, by phone or on your statement, and stop autopay at least three business days before you pay it off. Check your contract for any fees.

7How long until I get my title after payoff?

Wells Fargo usually starts the lien release within 10 days after the payoff posts. If you don’t have your title within 60 days, contact your state motor vehicle office.

8What if I can’t make my payment?

Call 1-800-289-8004 before you miss it. Options include a one-time due date change and a payment deferral. Payments 30+ days late may appear on your credit report.

When we read Wells Fargo’s auto loan pages and FAQ end to end, the message was consistent: auto loans come “only” through its dealer network of nearly 11,000 dealerships, and refinancing isn’t available. There’s no rate table, no application button and no preapproval tool. The bank pulled back from direct and refinance auto lending years ago and has concentrated on dealer relationships since.

That strategy is growing fast. In its fourth-quarter results reported in January, Wells Fargo’s auto originations reached $10.2 billion, up 104% from a year earlier, and its auto portfolio grew to $50.5 billion. Industry coverage tied most of that jump to the Volkswagen deal.

How a Wells Fargo Loan Through a Dealer Really Works

Because you never talk to Wells Fargo during the purchase, it helps to know what happens behind the finance office door.

How dealer-arranged financing flowsStep one: you fill out a credit application at the dealership. Step two: the dealer sends it to several lenders, which may include Wells Fargo. Step three: a lender approves you at a wholesale buy rate. Step four: the dealer may offer you a contract rate that is higher than the buy rate and keep part of the difference. Step five: after signing, Wells Fargo services the loan and you pay Wells Fargo directly.Behind the finance office doorWhat happens between “sign here” and your first bill You apply at the dealer1You fill out one credit application at the dealership Dealer shops it to lenders2Dealer sends it to several lenders, often incl. Figure 3. Our diagram of standard dealer-arranged (“indirect”) financing. Step 4 is where a preapproval from another lender gives you leverage. Hover or tap a step.

The key detail is the gap between the lender’s buy rate and the rate on your contract. Dealers are commonly allowed to add a markup, which is how many of them earn money on financing. It’s legal and often negotiable, but you’ll only know to negotiate if you walk in with a competing offer. A preapproval from a credit union or another bank sets a ceiling the dealer has to beat.

The other details worth knowing: one dealer application can trigger several lender inquiries, but credit scoring models generally treat auto loan inquiries made within a short shopping window as a single inquiry. And the loan isn’t final until the lender funds it. If the dealer calls days later saying “financing fell through” and asks you to sign at a higher rate, you’re allowed to say no and return the car under the terms of your contract and state law.

Volkswagen, Audi and Ducati buyers

Since May 1, 2025, Wells Fargo has been the preferred purchase financing provider for Volkswagen and Audi in the U.S., with loans co-branded with Volkswagen Financial Services; Ducati joined in April 2026. In practice, if you finance a new VW or Audi through the dealer, there’s a good chance your loan is a Wells Fargo loan. Volkswagen Financial Services keeps its focus on leasing and continues servicing retail contracts it made before the switch, so a VW loan from before May 2025 may still be serviced by VW, not Wells Fargo. Check your contract or statement to see who your lender is.

What Car Loan Rates Look Like Right Now

Wells Fargo doesn’t publish auto rates, so national averages are the best yardstick for any dealer quote.

Experian’s latest market data puts the overall average at 6.35% for new car loans and 11.19% for used, with average financed amounts of about $43,610 new and $27,852 used. New car loans averaged 69.5 months, and the average new car payment hit $765 a month. Use these as reality checks: if a dealer quotes a prime borrower 9% on a new car, ask what the lender’s buy rate is and whether any outside offer can beat it.

The broader market is busy. The New York Fed reported in August that auto loan balances reached $1.713 trillion, with $211 billion in new auto loans in the second quarter, and about 3% of balances moving into serious delinquency on an annualized basis.

The calculator uses Experian’s second-quarter averages for each tier as the baseline. Those are averages across all lenders, not Wells Fargo’s buy rates, so treat the result as a benchmark rather than a promise. If you enter a dealer quote, it tells you how much more or less you’d pay over the loan compared with the average for your tier.

We ran a common case: $30,000 financed over 60 months by a prime borrower on a new car. At the 6.15% average, total interest comes to about $4,925. A one-point markup adds roughly $845, and two points adds about $1,700, for the same car. That’s why a 15-minute credit union preapproval is one of the best-paid tasks in car buying.

Is a Wells Fargo personal loan a smart way to buy a car?

Sometimes. The personal loan runs from $3,000 to $100,000, with terms from 12 to 84 months, no origination fee and no prepayment penalty, and Wells Fargo says most approved customers get funds the same day. Rates start at 6.74% for excellent credit, including a relationship discount for autopay from a Wells Fargo account. The catch: you must have been a Wells Fargo customer for at least 12 months, and the loan isn’t secured by the car, so rates for anything less than excellent credit can climb well above typical auto loan rates.

It works best in three cases: buying from a private seller, buying an older car some auto lenders won’t finance, or wanting cash in hand to negotiate as a “cash buyer.” For a newer car from a dealer, a secured auto loan will usually be cheaper. Compare the personal loan offer with the average auto rate for your tier in Figure 4 before choosing.

The preapproval playStep one: get preapproved by a credit union or bank before shopping. Step two: negotiate the car’s price separately from financing. Step three: ask the dealer to beat your preapproved rate. Step four: pick the lower total cost, whether it’s the dealer’s lender, such as Wells Fargo, or your own.Make the dealer competeFour steps that protect you from a marked-up rate Get preapproved first1Preapprovalcredit union Negotiate price first2Price firstnot the payment Ask the dealer to beat it3“Beat this”show your rate Take the lower total cost4Lowest totalany lender If Wells Fargo through the dealer beats your preapproval, great. You only know it’s a good deal because you had something to compare.

Already Have a Wells Fargo Auto Loan? Here’s How Things Work

Most searches for Wells Fargo and car loans come from people who already have one. These are the answers from Wells Fargo’s own help pages.

1

Making payments

You can set up autopay or make one-time payments in the Wells Fargo Mobile app or Wells Fargo Online, and view online statements for up to 12 months. If a payment is 30 or more days late, it may be reported to the credit bureaus; late fees and grace periods are in your contract and vary by state.

2

Changing your due date

You can change your due date once per loan, only after your first payment, and by up to 15 days. Your account must be current or no more than 10 days past due. Your payment amount stays the same, and your maturity date adjusts. Requests are made by phone.

3

Paying it off

Get a payoff quote online, by phone or on your statement; online payoff works for amounts under $5,000. Turn off autopay at least three business days before you pay off the loan so you don’t make an extra payment. For mailed payoffs, include your 10-digit account number or 17-digit VIN.

4

Getting your title

Wells Fargo usually starts the lien release within 10 days after the payoff posts. How long the title takes after that depends on your state. If you don’t have it within 60 days of the paid-in-full date, contact your state motor vehicle department. Title questions go to 1-888-329-4856.

5

Selling or trading in

To sell privately, the loan must be paid off first. If you trade in at a dealer, the dealer pays off the loan for you, but keep making your payments until Wells Fargo receives that payoff. A missed payment during the handoff still counts as missed.

6

Insurance and GAP

You must keep the car insured for the life of the loan, with Wells Fargo Auto listed as loss payee, and keep paying after an accident while the claim is settled. GAP coverage, if you bought it, may cover part of what you still owe after a total loss. If you pay off the loan early, ask about a refund of the unused portion of GAP and other add-ons.

Hardship options, from least to most drasticOne: change your due date, once per loan, up to 15 days. Two: ask about deferring a payment, which extends the loan and keeps interest accruing. Three: if you’re an active-duty servicemember, check whether you qualify for a 6 percent rate cap under the SCRA. Figure 8. Our ladder of the hardship options Wells Fargo describes. Selling the car yourself can bring more than a surrender or repossession. Hover or tap a rung.

If you’re behind, call 1-800-289-8004 as early as you can. A surrendered or repossessed car is usually sold at auction for less than you owe, and you can be billed for the difference plus fees. Selling the car yourself, even at a loss, often leaves a smaller gap. If a repossession has already happened, Wells Fargo’s repossession line is 1-888-937-9992.

If you had a Wells Fargo auto loan years ago

In December 2022, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ordered Wells Fargo to pay more than $1.3 billion in redress tied to auto loan servicing problems, including misapplied payments, improper fees and interest, wrongful repossessions and missed refunds on add-on products like GAP when loans ended early. The order also required Wells Fargo to make sure unused GAP fees are refunded. Wells Fargo announced in January 2025 that the order had terminated. If you think you were affected and never received a payment, you can contact Wells Fargo or file a complaint with the CFPB.

You’re a Wells Fargo customer about to buy a car

Your bank can’t preapprove you for an auto loan, but you have two moves. If you’ve been a customer for 12+ months, check your personal loan rate online first. Then get an auto loan preapproval from a credit union. Take both to the dealer and let its lenders, which may include Wells Fargo, try to beat them.

You want to refinance a Wells Fargo auto loan

Wells Fargo won’t do it, but other lenders will refinance a Wells Fargo loan. If rates have dropped or your credit has improved since you bought the car, compare credit union and online refinance offers. A Wells Fargo auto loan won’t work without a dealer. A Wells Fargo personal loan can, if you’re eligible, or a credit union private-party auto loan, which often costs less because it’s secured by the car. Either way, check the title for liens before you pay.

A new federal deduction lets eligible buyers deduct up to $10,000 a year of interest on a loan for a new vehicle with final assembly in the U.S., bought for personal use after December 31, 2024, for tax years through 2028. It phases out above $100,000 of modified adjusted gross income, or $200,000 for joint filers. You must list the vehicle’s VIN on your return, and used cars and leases don’t qualify. Our Verdict

If you’re shopping for a car

Wells Fargo can be a perfectly good lender, but you’ll only meet it through a dealer, and you’ll only know its rate is good if you bring a competing offer. Get a credit union or bank preapproval first, negotiate the price before the financing, and let the dealer’s lenders try to beat your number.

Use autopay, call early if money gets tight, and plan payoffs around the 10-day lien release and your state’s title timeline. If you want a lower rate, refinance elsewhere, because Wells Fargo won’t.

Questions people still ask

Does Wells Fargo do used car loans?

Yes, through participating dealers. You can’t get a Wells Fargo used car loan directly or for a private-party sale.

What credit score do you need for a Wells Fargo auto loan?

Wells Fargo doesn’t publish a minimum. Approval and rate depend on your full credit profile, the vehicle and the deal structure, all submitted by the dealer. Expect rates near the averages for your credit tier.

Can I find out my Wells Fargo auto rate before going to the dealer?

No. Wells Fargo doesn’t offer auto preapproval. You can check a personal loan rate if you’re an eligible customer, or get an auto preapproval from another lender.

Can I transfer my Wells Fargo auto loan to someone else?

Auto loans generally can’t be transferred. The usual path is for the other person to get their own loan to buy the car, which pays off yours.

Does Wells Fargo do motorcycle loans?

Through participating dealers, and Wells Fargo became the preferred purchase financing provider for Ducati in April 2026. Ask the dealer which products are available.

Is there a prepayment penalty on Wells Fargo auto loans?

Wells Fargo’s FAQ doesn’t list one but points you to your contract for fees. Wells Fargo personal loans state there’s no prepayment penalty.

Why is my loan with Wells Fargo when I financed at a dealer?
