Midtown does not publish a price. Its Help Center says the way to find out is to choose Check Pricing on the website, hand over some personal details and wait for a personalized quote by email. That is why every blog gives a different number. We read Midtown’s Help Center and club pages, collected the dated price reports members have posted, and then did what most guides skip: we read the Illinois law that governs fitness contracts. It gives you a three-business-day cancellation right, a path out if you move, and written-notice rules that a luxury club’s 12-month agreement has to respect.
Key Answers Before You Book a Tour
Premium clubs sell through tours and quotes, which means the useful facts hide in the paperwork. Each answer is short on purpose; the sections after it carry the evidence and the exceptions.
Midtown does not publish a price; it emails a personalized quote. The most recent member reports we found, from 2022, were about $250 to $260 a month for an individual with a $350 joining fee, and $411 to $444 for couples. Assume today’s figure is higher and get yours in writing.
Midtown’s Help Center says pricing is generated as a personalized quote after you choose Check Pricing and share contact details. Offers also differ by club: Willowbrook’s page advertises a $0 initiation fee, while Palatine’s page urges you to lock in a rate.
Yes. Midtown says an initial membership is a 12-month contract, which it explains as supporting its programming and your accountability. The details of notice and cancellation are in the agreement you sign, so ask for a copy before you pay.
Unlimited group classes, with more than 100 a week at each club, open use of fitness areas and pools, locker use, towels, locker-room supplies and a set number of guest passes. Chicago members also get parking for up to three hours, and parent-with-child and family plans include childcare.
Racquet sports programs, Pilates, personal training, youth activities and camps, spa services, golf instruction and the hotel are paid separately. Guests beyond your passes pay a guest fee, which is $35 on restricted days at the Chicago club.
Dues for the coming month, plus the previous month’s in-club charges, are billed on the second business day of each month by ACH, credit card or debit card. Midtown is cashless.
Under the Illinois Physical Fitness Services Act you may cancel within three business days of signing and receive a full refund. You may also have limited rights if you move more than 25 miles away or become disabled. Notice can go by certified mail, through the website if you joined online, or by email.
That depends almost entirely on visits. At $259 a month, eight visits cost about $32 each and twelve about $22. If you will use the courts, the pool, classes and childcare, the math works better than for a gym visit alone.
Midtown operates clubs in Chicago, Bannockburn, Palatine and Willowbrook in Illinois, plus other states and Quebec. A Midtown representative told one reviewer that members may upgrade to a premier membership to use all locations, so ask which tier covers which clubs.
What You Will Actually Pay Near You, and How to Get Your Own Number
Midtown sells by quote, so the honest answer is a range with dates attached. Here is the evidence, how reliable it is, and how to replace it with your own.
We started with Midtown’s own Help Center, which was the most useful source we found. Its pricing article is one short paragraph: choose Check Pricing from the website menu, supply a little personal information and Midtown will email a personalized quote. The club pages repeat the idea. Midtown’s Chicago page says the first step toward membership is booking an appointment with the team to discuss options, and its general knowledge base says membership options vary by club and should be checked on the website for the latest offerings.
The result is that nobody outside Midtown can quote a 2026 price with authority. When we compared community reports, we found numbers that move with the year and the plan. A Yelp contributor reported $220 a month and a $500 joining fee per membership in January 2019. Another reported $230 and $250 in January 2020. On a Chicago workplace forum, a member who joined in September 2022 said individuals paid $259 with a $350 joining fee and couples $444 with $700, after increases that October. One commenter said a member under 26 paid less, about $190, although that is one person’s report, not a published rate.
| Source and date | Individual, monthly | Joining fee | How much to trust it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yelp member answer, January 2019 | $220 | $500 per membership | Old; one person |
| Yelp member answer, January 2020 | $230 | $250 | Old; one person |
| Workplace forum, September 2022 | $259 after an October increase | $350 | Dated; self-reported |
| Workplace forum, couples, 2022 | $444 per couple | $700 | Dated; self-reported |
| Midtown Help Center | Personalized quote by email | Varies by club and offer | Official, but no number |
| Content-farm estimate (TinyGrab) | $150 to $400+ | $100 to $500+ | Generic; not sourced to Midtown |
Two warnings about price pages. First, the content-farm estimate in the last row reads as authoritative and is not: it lists made-up hypothetical tiers and a generic 30-day notice. Second, several documents that surface in searches describe a different business. We found a membership agreement for a gym called Midtown Fitness that lists a 10-business-day notice rule and a 50% cancellation fee for annual plans. That is not Midtown Athletic Club, and quoting it would mislead you. Check the logo and address before you rely on any document.
In practical terms, plan for the 2022 numbers plus a cushion. At $259 a month, a first year with the $350 joining fee comes to $3,458; for a couple at $444 and $700 it is $6,028. If your quote lands lower, good. If it lands higher, you now know what the starting point was.
| Scenario | Monthly | First-year dues | With joining fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual at 2022 report | $259 | $3,108 | $3,458 |
| Two individuals at 2022 report | $518 combined | $6,216 | $6,916 (if $350 each) |
| Couple at 2022 report | $444 | $5,328 | $6,028 |
| Couple saving versus two singles | $74 a month | $888 a year | $888 less in dues |
Choose Check Pricing on the Midtown website and submit your details; the quote arrives by email, which gives you a record. Then ask the sales team, in writing, six questions: what is the monthly dues amount for my plan, what is the joining fee today and can it be waived, how long is the initial contract, how do I give notice, which clubs does my tier include, and what will be billed on the second business day of my first month. Also ask for the contract text before the tour so you can read it away from the sales desk.
Compare clubs if you live where more than one Midtown is reachable. Offers differ: Willowbrook’s page advertises a $0 initiation fee, Palatine’s page urges prospects to lock in the lowest pricing, and Chicago’s page directs you to an appointment. Ask each one what its current offer includes and when it ends.
Midtown lists separate numbers for new-membership inquiries and for everything else. Use the new-membership line for pricing and tours, and the other line for billing and member services. Always confirm numbers on the club’s page before you call.
What Is Included, What Costs Extra, and the Guest Rules
At this price the useful question is not whether the club is nice. It is what the dues cover and where the second bill starts. Midtown lists both, if you know where to look.
| Item | Included in dues? | What Midtown says | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group fitness classes | Yes | Unlimited, with more than a hundred a week at each club | Class availability varies by club and time |
| Pools, steam, sauna, hot tubs | Yes | Open use of fitness facilities, pools and spa-style amenities | Outdoor pools are seasonal |
| Locker, towels, supplies | Yes | Daily locker use, towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion | None noted |
| Parking | Yes, Chicago garage | Up to three hours | Longer stays are not covered |
| Childcare (Kidtown) | Parent-with-child and family plans | Up to two hours daily | Parent stays onsite; no diaper changes; guest fees may apply |
| Basketball courts | Yes, varies by club | Complimentary where offered | Not every club has them |
| Racquet court reservations | Reservation privileges only | Exclusive reservation access at qualifying clubs in eligible seasons | Programs and lessons are paid |
| Pilates, personal training, youth activities, camps | No | Available as paid programming | Prices set per program and club |
| Guest passes | A set number a year | Number depends on your membership type | Expire after 12 months; no rollover |
| LAUNCH onboarding | Yes, first three months | 120 minutes of complimentary services | Use it or lose it |
The second bill: programs, spa, courts and in-club charges
In our review of the Help Center we found that Midtown separates two things many members blur together: the dues, which unlock the club, and the programming, which is where much of the club’s identity lives. Racquet sports instruction, Pilates, personal training, youth activities and camps are described as paid programming that members can access, not as included services. The spa, golf instruction and swim-lane reservations are booked separately and, for the hotel, as a reservation of The Hotel at Midtown Chicago.
Midtown also allows charge-to-account services inside the club. The billing article says that in-club charges from the previous month are collected together with the next month’s dues on the second business day, and that the club is cashless. That is convenient and also the way an extra $200 of spa treatments, cafรฉ meals and lessons can show up on a bank statement as one large draft. A good habit is to check your member account at the end of each month and note what will be added to the draft.
The guest policy, translated
| Rule | What Midtown says | Applies to | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guest passes | A set number each year on your anniversary; expire after 12 months | All members | Plan visits; unused passes vanish |
| Accompaniment | An active member must be with the guest at all times | All clubs | No dropping off a friend |
| Repeat guests | The same guest up to three times a year, pass or fee | Adult members 18 and over | Not a free trial membership for a friend |
| Waivers | Guest waivers required | All guests | Arrive early to sign |
| Summer weekends | No guests on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend | Chicago club | Poolside entertaining has limits |
| Off-season weekends | Guests must be 21+; $35 guest fee, no free passes | Chicago club | Weekend family guests cost money |
| Select holidays | No free passes on New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas; $35 fee and 21+; no guests on Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day and Labor Day | Chicago club | Holiday plans need a backup |
The Chicago restrictions are the strictest we found, and they are the part brochures omit. A member who plans to host cousins on a July Saturday will learn that guests are not allowed on summer weekends, and one who plans a Thanksgiving workout with a visiting sibling will pay $35 and must confirm the guest is 21 or older. Other clubs may differ, so ask your own club for its restrictions in writing before you count on a guest.
The clubs, and what “near me” really means
Midtown began in Chicago in 1970 as a single tennis club, according to its own history, and now operates several clubs. The Chicago club at 2444 North Elston Avenue is the flagship: Time Out describes a 575,000-square-foot facility with 16 tennis courts, pools, a restaurant, a spa and a 55-room hotel, and Midtown’s page highlights seven boutique studios and a rooftop pool. Palatine lists six studios, indoor and outdoor tennis and new pickleball courts. Willowbrook, which advertises a $0 initiation fee, lists five studios and new cardio and strength equipment this year. Bannockburn serves the North Shore with studios, tennis and paddle courts and childcare.
Outside Illinois, third-party listings show clubs in Weston, Florida, Rochester, New York and Overland Park, Kansas, and Midtown’s own site lists Quebec. Whether a membership works at another club depends on the tier, so treat any claim that your membership covers all clubs as unproven until your agreement says so. A Midtown representative’s reply on Yelp said members may upgrade to a premier membership to use all locations.
Your Rights Under Illinois Law Before You Sign or Leave
Premium clubs lean on the idea that the contract is the contract. In Illinois, a fitness contract has to meet a statute, and the statute tilts a few important points toward you.
The Physical Fitness Services Act is published on the Illinois General Assembly’s website, and in our reading it matters in six ways. First, a fitness contract must be in writing and must set out your total payment obligation, so you should be able to find a line that says what you owe over the term. Second, you may cancel within three business days after the first business day after you sign, and every dollar you paid must be refunded. Business days count only when the facility is open.
Third, if you move your residence more than 25 miles from the club, and the club does not designate a comparable center within 25 miles of your new home that agrees to take over the contract, you may cancel. You owe only the charges up to the point you present reasonable evidence of the move, plus a fee if the contract provides one, capped at 10% of the unused balance or $50, whichever is less. Fourth, if death or disability prevents you from using the services, you owe only the portion attributable to the time before it began, and the club may ask for reasonable evidence.
| Situation | What the Act says | How to use it | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Just signed | Cancel within 3 business days for a full refund | Send written notice immediately if you have doubts | Count business days the club is open |
| Moving 25+ miles | May cancel if no comparable center within 25 miles takes over; owe charges to date plus a capped fee | Document your new address | A club with other locations may try to designate one |
| Death or disability | Owe only charges up to onset; club may verify | Provide a doctor’s note or other evidence | Do it in writing, promptly |
| How to give notice | Certified or registered mail to the address in the contract, online at the center’s website if you joined online, or by the email in the contract | Use the method in your contract and keep the receipt | A verbal request is the weakest |
| Refund timing | Refunds due within 30 days of the center receiving notice | Calendar the 30th day | Ask for the refund amount in writing |
| Contract length | No payments or financing over 3 years from the contract date | Check the term and renewal | Longer terms violate the Act |
| Misleading ads | A contract made in reliance on false or misleading advertising is void and unenforceable | Save the ad or email you relied on | Screenshot promotional offers |
Two more provisions are worth knowing. A waiver of the Act’s protections is void, which means a clause that says you give up your cancellation rights does not bind you. And a contract that does not comply with the Act is void and unenforceable, with enforcement by the Attorney General. The Act also caps payments for basic physical fitness services at $2,500 a year, with different treatment for family and couple memberships and for services outside the basic category. How a luxury club’s dues are classified is a question for the Attorney General’s consumer office, not for us, but it is a question you are entitled to ask.
A caution on scope. The Act governs contracts for physical fitness services in Illinois. If you join a Midtown in Florida, New York, Kansas or Quebec, different rules apply, and we have not reviewed them. And your signed agreement may contain additional terms, such as how notice must be delivered and when dues stop, that sit alongside the statute. Midtown’s Help Center says only that members make changes through the member app, under Account and Profile, then Membership change requests, and that submitting the form is not acceptance: a Midtown associate follows up. Treat that as a request process, not as proof of cancellation.
If you decide to cancel, do it in the method your contract and the Act allow, and keep proof. Send an email to the address in your contract, or certified mail to the address in the contract, or use the website form if you joined online. Include your name, member number, club, the effective date you want and a request for written confirmation of your last billing date. Screenshot the app request too, since Midtown says the app form is a request, not an acceptance.
Is It Worth It? The Cost-Per-Visit Math
A club at this price lives or dies on use. Divide dues by visits, then ask what else you are buying.
In our cost-per-visit testing we divided monthly dues by visits at the 2022 reported price and at a round $300 ceiling. At $259, four visits cost about $65 each, eight about $32, twelve about $22, sixteen about $16 and twenty about $13. At $300 those become $75, $37.50, $25, $18.75 and $15. The joining fee adds $350 once, which at the 2022 figure is about $29 a month over the first year.
Those numbers are only half the equation. A visit to Midtown can include a class, a swim, a sauna, a meal and a stretch of childcare, and a family of four that uses it twelve times a month each is buying a lot of hours. For a single person who works out alone for 45 minutes, the same dues buy the same equipment you can find elsewhere for a fraction of the price. The honest question is whether you will use what only a club like this has.
| Visits per month | At $240 | At $259 | At $300 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | $60.00 | $64.75 | $75.00 |
| 8 | $30.00 | $32.38 | $37.50 |
| 12 | $20.00 | $21.58 | $25.00 |
| 16 | $15.00 | $16.19 | $18.75 |
| 20 | $12.00 | $12.95 | $15.00 |
Open your phone’s location or fitness history and count how many times you went to a gym in the last three months. Divide by three. Be honest: a sales desk invites you to plan for your best month, not your average. Multiply your realistic visits by your family’s use of childcare, courts, the pool and classes, and divide your quoted dues by that figure. If the answer is above $35 per visit and you cannot name three things at Midtown you would use that you cannot get elsewhere, keep looking.
How Midtown compares with other options in the area
| Club | Reported price | Contract and notice | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midtown Athletic Club | No list price; 2022 reports near $259 plus joining fee | 12-month initial contract; notice in your agreement | Tennis, family, classes, resort-style amenities |
| Chicago Athletic Clubs | $75 month-to-month or $70 with a 12-month agreement under a university affiliate rate | Month-to-month available at the affiliate rate | Basic gym and classes at a lower price |
| Equinox | About $205 to $415 a month, reported | Notice varies by state; pay through it | Premium amenities and classes |
| Planet Fitness Classic | From $15 a month plus a $49 annual fee | Notice at least 8 days before billing | Low-cost equipment |
The Chicago Athletic Clubs row comes from a Northwestern University vendor-discount page and applies to university employees and students, not to the public, so treat it as an indication of the lower end of the local market. The Equinox and Planet Fitness figures come from our earlier guides to those clubs and carry the same caveats. None of these is an apples-to-apples price; each is a signal of how much of Midtown’s price is amenities and tennis rather than equipment.
Find Your Situation
A tour is written for everyone and fits no one. These are the situations where the cost, the contract or the club looks different, and the question each one tends to skip.
Childcare is the part of Midtown that changes the math. Midtown says parent-with-child and family memberships include up to two hours of Kidtown childcare a day. Two practical limits appear in the Help Center. Parents must stay onsite for the duration, and Kidtown associates cannot change diapers. Rules about reservations, cancellations and fees vary by club and are found through your club’s contact information in the member app.
Ask three questions on the tour. What are the Kidtown hours at my club, are there limits on age and duration, and what are the fees for camps and youth programs, which Midtown describes as paid programming. A family that uses two free childcare hours a day plus the pool and kids’ classes may find the dues easier to justify than a couple who never uses them. Ask for the family quote separately from two individuals.
Midtown’s identity is racquet sports, and its member benefits include reservation privileges for most racquet areas at qualifying clubs in eligible seasons. Availability varies by club location, and lessons, clinics and leagues are paid programming. When you tour, ask what the court-reservation window is, how far ahead you can book, and what lessons and clinics cost in addition to dues.
Midtown’s Help Center also references prepaid season court time and says unfinished prepaid services during a closure were credited to the member’s house account. That was a pandemic-era policy; ask what applies to prepaid court time and programs if you cancel mid-season, and get the answer in writing.
The numbers are what they are: at the 2022 reported price, a year of dues is about $3,100, plus a joining fee. We found no published senior or retiree rate on Midtown’s pages, so assume none unless your quote says otherwise. If you would use the club on weekdays for classes, the pool and the courts, the cost per visit may be tolerable. If you would go twice a week, it is about $30 a visit.
Before you sign, work out the exit. A 12-month contract is a commitment of several thousand dollars. Ask what happens if your health changes, and note that the Illinois Act limits what you owe if disability prevents use. Ask also about billing: dues are collected by ACH or card on the second business day each month, so confirm your account has enough balance for the draft and any in-club charges.
In the 2022 reports we found, a couple paid $444 a month with a $700 joining fee, while singles paid $259 with a $350 fee. Two singles would then cost $518 a month and $700 to join, so the couple plan would save about $74 a month, or $888 over a year. Those figures are dated and self-reported, so use them as a framework, not a quote.
Ask what a couple plan includes. Do both partners get the same guest passes? Are childcare benefits different? What happens if one partner wants to cancel? Midtown’s help article says the primary member on the account makes membership changes through the app, which means one partner controls the account. Make sure you both know whose name the contract is under.
Marketing urgency is part of the sale. Midtown’s Palatine page urges prospects to join today to lock in their rate, and Willowbrook’s advertises a $0 initiation fee. Those may be genuine offers, but a deadline is a reason to read the contract more carefully, not less. Under Illinois law you have three business days after signing to cancel for a full refund, so a mistake is correctable, but only if you act in writing and inside the window.
Ask what the offer locks. Is it the monthly dues for the 12-month term, for as long as you remain a member, or only the initiation fee? Does the price change after the initial term? Get the answer in an email, because a verbal promise from a sales associate may not be in the contract.
Illinois gives you a path if you move more than 25 miles from the club and the club does not designate a comparable center within 25 miles of your new residence that will accept your contract. You owe the charges up to the point you present reasonable evidence of the move plus a capped fee of the lesser of 10% of the unused balance or $50, if the contract provides one. Send the evidence, such as a lease or utility bill, with your written notice.
Midtown has multiple clubs, so ask whether the club will designate one near your new home; if it does, the statute’s right to cancel may not apply. That is worth knowing before you assume you can leave.
Under the Act, if death or disability prevents you from using the services, you owe only the portion of charges attributable to the time before it began, and the club may require reasonable evidence. Collect a doctor’s note that states when the disability began and send it with your written notice. Do not wait until the next bill arrives.
We could not find a current published Midtown hold or freeze policy. The only hold language we found was in a pandemic-era billing FAQ, which offered a complimentary two-month hold at the time. Ask the club whether any hold exists today, and get the answer in writing.
Guests are limited: a set number of passes a year that expire after twelve months, only three visits per guest per year and a member must accompany them. At the Chicago club, guests are not allowed on Friday, Saturday or Sunday from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, and a $35 fee applies on other restricted days. Spa services, golf instruction and the hotel are booked separately and billed on top of dues.
If entertaining is part of why you want to join, tally the likely extras. Ten guest fees at $35 is $350, which is roughly the cost of another month of dues, and a few spa appointments can double a month’s statement.
Gather your written notice, how you sent it and the date it was received. The Act requires refunds due to a cancelling customer to be paid within 30 days of the center receiving the notice. Compare your last charge date with your contract’s notice terms, since a charge inside a valid notice period may be legitimate. Midtown bills dues for the coming month on the second business day, so the timing of your notice matters.
If the club will not correct it, ask your card or bank how to dispute a charge for a service you cancelled, and file a complaint with the Illinois Attorney General’s consumer office. Keep the app screenshots, emails and certified-mail receipt.
Midtown’s Yelp listing and knowledge base mention coworking spaces and healthy dining at some clubs, so a member who works from the club between classes may get more use from dues than a pure gym member. If this is why you are considering the club, ask what workspace exists at your location, what hours it is open and whether it is included in your tier or reserved for certain memberships. Also check noise and call policies in the club etiquette page.
Contacts, Changes and Exit Without Paying Twice
The cheapest month at any club is the one you do not pay after you leave. Here is how to handle changes, billing and exits using Midtown’s own processes and the Illinois statute.
| Club | Address | New membership line | All other inquiries |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicago | 2444 N Elston Ave, Chicago, IL 60647 | 773-687-7100 | 773-235-2300 |
| Bannockburn | 2211 Waukegan Rd, Bannockburn, IL 60015 | 847-607-7074 | 847-945-1818 |
| Palatine | 1760 N Hicks Rd, Palatine, IL 60074 | 847-496-2680 | 847-991-4646 |
| Willowbrook | 215 63rd St, Willowbrook, IL 60527 | 630-861-7770 | 630-325-8888 |
For account changes, Midtown’s Help Center directs the primary member to the member app: Account and Profile, then Membership change requests. Be specific in the details field and attach any documents. The Help Center is explicit that clicking submit is not an acceptance of the change, and that a Midtown associate will contact you. In practice, that means you should follow up by email to the address in your contract and keep the request screenshot.
For billing, remember the second-business-day rhythm. Dues for the upcoming month and the prior month’s in-club charges are collected together. If you are cancelling, check the date on which your last full month will be billed, because a notice that arrives a day late can add a month. The Illinois Act’s notice methods, certified mail, the website for online joiners, or the email listed in the contract, are the ones to rely on.
Read the notice clause in your agreement. Send written notice by a method the contract and the Act allow. Include your name, member number, club, effective date and a request for written confirmation. Screenshot any app request. Keep the certified-mail receipt. Calendar the 30th day after the club receives your notice for any refund. Check your next statement for the second-business-day draft.
What is my total payment obligation under this contract? How long is the initial term and what happens after it? How do I give notice and to whom? Which clubs does my tier cover? Are there annual or assessment fees besides dues? What are the guest-pass count and fees? Is there any hold policy? What happens to prepaid court time and programs if I leave? A club that answers these clearly is easier to leave and easier to trust.
Start with the club’s general manager and member services line, then put your complaint in writing. If it is not resolved, contact the Illinois Attorney General’s consumer protection office, which enforces the Physical Fitness Services Act, and ask your bank or card issuer about disputing a charge for a service you cancelled. Do not rely on online reviews to resolve a billing issue; reviews are useful for patterns, not for a refund.
Prices and policies reflect Midtown Athletic Club’s Help Center, club pages and public member reports, and the Illinois Physical Fitness Services Act as published by the Illinois General Assembly, as we reviewed them in mid-October. Midtown does not publish a price list; the monthly dues and joining fees cited here are dated, self-reported figures from 2019 to 2022 and are not quotes. Your signed agreement controls, and your club’s offers, fees and policies may differ. Cost-per-visit and first-year totals are our own arithmetic on those reported figures. Other clubs’ prices come from our earlier guides or from a university vendor page. The summary of Illinois law is plain-language and is not legal advice; consult the statute or an attorney.
