A quick estimate of the gold content
Based on the displayed reference price. Selling offers may be lower; jewelry retail prices can be higher.
A troy ounce is different
Gold uses the troy ounce: 31.1034768 grams. A regular household ounce is not the same measure.
Bid and ask, made simple
Bid is the dealer’s buying reference. Ask is its selling reference. Their difference is the spread; product premiums may be extra.
Spot is a reference price
There is no single official US retail gold price. Quotes vary by provider, timing and the product you buy or sell.
About the feed, freshness and calculations
Prices refresh every 30 seconds while this page is visible. The displayed timestamp belongs to the source quote, not the refresh button. A quote older than 5 minutes is marked “Older quote”; markets can pause overnight, on weekends or holidays.
The primary quote is Standard Bullion’s indicative wholesale ask. Daily change is measured against its reported opening reference, which may differ from a New York calendar-day change. Chart history is a separate sampled series from Standard Bullion, so its latest point may lag the quote. Historical low/high and change refer only to the selected samples. Times are shown in New York time (ET), including daylight saving.
If the primary feed fails, Gold API provides a separately labeled indicative reference; dealer bid, spread and daily changes are then unavailable. We do not combine prices from different providers to calculate changes. No simulated prices are displayed.
Conversions use 31.1034768 grams per troy ounce. Values are calculated before rounding. The purity estimate uses nominal karat divided by 24; the pure basis is a theoretical 100%. Quotes are informational and are not an offer to transact.
